Australia’s Four Corners programme has taken a close look at the power of that country’s supermarket duopoly, questioning the chief executives of Woolworths and Coles about their pricing and supplier negotiation tactics.
In a sometimes testy interview with Woolworths’ Brad Banducci, the chief executive abruptly stands up and leaves but eventually returns to continue.
Four Corners is one of Australia’s leading investigative journalism programmes and it aired its 45-minute supermarket programme on ABC on Sunday.
The Australian supermarket sector is the focus of a year-long investigation into pricing by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
The government there has also appointed former trade and consumer affairs minister Craig Emerson to lead a review of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct.
Australia’s parliament is also undertaking a separate inquiry into the behaviour of the country’s duopoly, with the Green Party leading the inquiry into alleged price-gouging or profiteering.
