Zespri warns chemical ban likely to hurt revenue

1st October 2021 By Staff Reporter | news@foodticker.co.nz | @foodtickernz

Zespri says a proposal to end the use of hydrogen cyanamide will likely hurt kiwifruit industry earnings.

Commonly called Hi-Cane, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has opened public consultation on a draft plan to phase out the chemical over five years before a total ban. It is commonly sprayed on bare kiwifruit orchards to help buds form after winter.

“Zespri acknowledges that [Thursday’s] EPA announcement would likely adversely impact on future New Zealand kiwifruit industry revenues should the draft recommendations be enacted in its current form,” the co-op said.

“Given the current draft EPA recommendation is subject to further public consultation and determination by an independent panel, any outcome remains highly uncertain.”

More information on the consultation can be found here.
