The Brewers Association of New Zealand, Brewers Guild of New Zealand and Hospitality New Zealand have jointly called on the government to freeze excise on beer in 2023 and introduce a new lower rate on keg beer.
A second steep increase in beer tax is forecast to stifle investment, innovation and growth and potentially put some brewers out of business.
The New Zealand brewing industry turned in sales of $3.3bn in the year to September 2022, up by $500,000 on the year prior, according to research from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research.
New Zealanders are set to pay $1.3bn in alcohol excise in 2022, up from $1.22bn last year, says the Brewers Guild of New Zealand.
An increase in beer consumption because of lockdown will not be sustained and overall sales are in decline, says Brewers Association of New Zealand executive director Dylan Firth.
