Questions are being raised about how salmon are farmed in New Zealand following an investigation of the Scottish industry that revealed suffering, breaches of animal welfare laws, and high mortality rates.
“Salmon in Scotland and New Zealand are farmed in broadly similar ways,” said SAFE chief executive Debra Ashton.
The New Zealand Government and the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee were currently developing the code of welfare for farmed fish, which was expected to be completed in one to three years.
Ashton said it was “crucial that we understand the current situation for salmon raised in New Zealand and that NAWAC keeps the welfare of these animals front and centre when developing the new code of welfare”.
