Red meat exports jump as China demand surges

1st October 2021 By Staff Reporter | news@foodticker.co.nz | @foodtickernz

The value of New Zealand’s red meat exports topped $650m in August 2021, up 26% on the same month last year, says the Meat Industry Association.

The increase was largely driven by growth in beef exports, which reached $299m, up 39% compared to August 2020.

Exports to New Zealand’s top three beef markets grew significantly, with China surging 89% to $117m, the United States increasing 31% to $102m, and Japan up 31% to $15m.

MIA chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said herd rebuilding in Australia and export restrictions in Argentina, due to detections of atypical BSE, contributed to tight global beef supplies.
