Plant & Food Research has secured $20m from the government’s Endeavour Fund.
The cash included $14.5m for a new research programme to help develop New Zealand’s horticultural sector to prepare for climate change.
About $5m was earmarked for five Smart Ideas projects, including understanding the genes controlling the compounds produced in mānuka that affect honey value.
In total, 69 new scientific research projects were awarded more than $244m from the Endeavour Fund, including a number of notable food projects.
