The government has started dispute settlement proceedings against Canada regarding its implementation of dairy tariff rate quotas (TRQs) under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Trade and Export Growth Minister Damien O’Connor said New Zealand believed Canada’s implementation of dairy TRQs to be inconsistent with its obligations under the CPTPP, which came into force in December 2018.
O’Connor said it was impacting Kiwi exporters unable to fully benefit from the market access negotiated under the agreement, with the value to New Zealand of this lost market access is estimated to be approximately $68m over the first two years and expected to increase year-on-year.
