The Ministry for Primary Industries has identified hemp as having export market opportunities.
The global industrial hemp market was expected to reach $22bn by 2027 and was an emerging industry in New Zealand.
Having only been deregulated since 2006, the New Zealand market was still in its infancy, with low levels of understanding among the general population and farmers and limited cultivation.
Opportunities on how hemp could be manufactured would be discussed at The iHemp Summit and Expo in May 2021.
