Plant-based protein opportunities for NZ – report

11th November 2020 By Staff Reporter | news@foodticker.co.nz | @foodtickernz

The rise in demand for meat substitutes will create opportunities for plant-based protein producers in New Zealand to ramp up production, according to a new report from Rabobank.

Getting Granular with Plant-Based Meat Substitutes – Opportunities for Grains, Oilseeds and Pulses, highlighted field peas – the only pulse produced in New Zealand at scale – as the greatest opportunity for New Zealand but production would need to lift from 8,000 to 20,000 metric tons per annum.

The agribusiness bank grains and oilseeds analyst Cheryl Kalisch Gordon added that even this level of production would still represent a small supply base on which to build processing capacity so premium pricing would be required to cover costs.
