Orchardist fined $14k after cyclists sprayed with chemicals

17th December 2020 By Staff Reporter | | @foodtickernz

Hawke’s Bay-based Johnny Appleseed Holding has been fined $14,000 after two cyclists travelling past one of the firm’s orchards were sprayed by agrichemical drift in September.

A complaint was made to the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s environmental officer, who went to the site and saw spray blowing over the path and road.

The company pleaded guilty in Hastings District Court on Wednesday to discharging agrichemicals into the air in breach of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Resource Management Plan.
