The Green Party wants the government to support a UN treaty to protect the oceans from industrial fishing, deep-sea drilling, plastic pollution, sediment run off from land, seabed mining, and warming sea temperatures.
Greens’ spokesperson for oceans and fisheries, Eugenie Sage, said one percent of the high seas was protected and called on the government to support the treaty.
A 60,000-signature petition calling for a global treaty was presented at parliament on Wednesday by Greenpeace.
