Foodstuffs South Island is recalling raw sugar from its South Island stores due to possible contamination with low levels of lead.
The sugar was subject to a previous recall and FSSI released it in error.
New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said FSSI was undertaking a review of its processes to ensure the error did not happen again.
“An NZFS expert science assessment, which was independently peer-reviewed, found the immediate food safety risk from the sugar was low,” Arbuckle said.
The recall affects about 1200 packages of 500g Chelsea brand Raw Sugar sold at Four Square, New World, and Pak’nSave supermarkets throughout the South Island, with around 1000 sold.
