Countdown project sees new fish name enter Māori dictionary

12th November 2021 By Staff Reporter | news@foodticker.co.nz | @foodtickernz

Deep sea cod has been given a Māori name, Moramora, which has been added to official te reo, following an an initiative between Countdown, te reo Māori advocacy group Ōkupu, and the Te Aka Māori Dictionary.

Countdown is in the process of introducing joint te reo Māori and English language labelling on all its packaged New Zealand seafood products. Its project partner, Māori language advocate and co-founder of Ōkupu, Paraone Glyone, was working on translations, and discovered no te reo name for Deep Sea Cod existed.

Glyone decided on the name and was able to add to the official te reo dictionary via a recently signed partnership with the Te Aka Māori Dictionary.
