Consumer NZ picks best supermarket hot cross buns

8th April 2022 By Staff Reporter | news@foodticker.co.nz | @foodtickernz

Countdown and FreshChoice bake the country’s best supermarket hot cross buns, according to Consumer New Zealand.

The consumer watchdog said it blind-tasted 11 classic and non-traditional hot cross buns from across New Zealand’s main supermarket chains for its test.

“Price isn’t really an indicator of a good hot cross bun,” said Consumer NZ test content team leader James le Page.

“The Countdown one that took out top spot was the cheapest we tried. Other buns at similar price points were a mixed bag.”

Countdown’s traditional hot cross buns sell for $3.50 for a half a dozen and FreshChoice’s half-dozen hot cross buns retail for $4.99.
